Sorry, this post is like 2 days behind. In Salzburg now but still trying to catch up...
Today we got up SUPER early (5:30AM T__T) to catch our ferry to Venice, which departed at 7AM. And even though we got to the port at 6:30, we almost missed our ferry because we realized we were at the WRONG port! (Luckily the port "across town" is literally just a 5 minute walk haha) Anyways, the ferry was pretty big, and it was nice except for the fact that the air conditioning was too strong and we got really cold >.< We arrived around 10:45am, but it literally took us a good hour to make our way to our hotel... (First off, the port we arrived in was on the other side of the island, not next to the train station as I had expected; second, we ended up overestimating how far away the hotel was from the train station, and had to backtrack) But luckily we didn't have to wait too long before they let us check in to our room!
The last time I came to Venice, I loved it and thought the bridges were super cute. This time, I realized just how touristy of a place it is. (After this trip I think I'm against going anywhere super touristy haha) As we were trying to find our hotel, there were just SO many people walking around, and it was so hard to get around them! Also, there are literally tourist trap restaurants and souvenir shops everywhere! (Especially in Cannaregio, where most of the hotels are) It got better as we ventured into other neighborhoods of Venice, but overall Venice is just really expensive and not really worth going back...
Anyways, for lunch we went to a restaurant that had reasonable prices, and had a tripadvisor sticker on their door. After we sat down, Stephanie looked up the restaurant, and they actually only had 2.5 stars!! SO NOT ALL TRIPADVISOR STICKERS ARE LEGIT! T___T We were really sad, especially after the food tasted pretty crappy. (The pasta was so-so, but we also got grilled salmon that tasted super bland and overcooked) And for dinner, we also wanted to stay close to the hotel (after walking around all day) so we ended up going to another so-so restaurant (though better than lunch). It's so hard to find a good inexpensive restaurant in Venice! (Especially on a Sunday when most local restaurants are closed) Luckily, we WERE able to find lots of great gelato places! Especially the 2nd one we went to called SUSO: I think I can say it was my favorite gelato place I've tried in Europe! Just because their Stracciatella (my go-to flavor and how I judge different gelaterias) was so delicious!
My mission of this trip is to find and purchase Murano glass! The problem is, there are SO many amazing pieces! But they are all super expensive! >.< So it's really a question about how much you're willing to pay, because there are no bargains; you literally get what you pay for quality-wise. More on that tomorrow.
